The Color of Love

Prologue

If you think racism between blacks and whites ended with the Civil Rights and Martin Luther King Jr. then you were wrong. Today, african-americans are accepted but some families still have racism buried in their hearts. It rules their lives. They can't eat, sleep, think or even work at their job or school without the thought that their daughter or son might be socializing with a "black" This is the story of a boy and a girl, whose hearts are not ruined by hate or prejudice of the other race.

Chapter 1

She isn't black but she isn't white; she's half. Her mom's white, and her dad's black. No one at school cares though. Actually, no one at school pays much attention to her except her friends. She's not what you'd call popular, she just...is. The only thing about her that would cause people to like her or pay attention to her is her appearance.
She's not eactly attractive (in her opinion) but her appearance is interesting. Her skin is te color of a tan most girls want. It was a mix between chocolate and a golden tan. All over her arms, and face ( and a little on her legs) were freckles. All of them from the horrible globe in the sky.
She hated the sun. She burned so easily; that's because of her mom. Even though her skin was brown, it was still fair enough to burn horribly. Her eyes were an undescribale blue. Whenever she asked her mom their color, all she said was, "Light blue." But she didn't want "light blue." She wanted someone to look at her eyes and say, " My what beautiful cobaly eyes do you have." She wanted her eyes to have a specific color. Whatever, she thought, sighing. Her name was Rosetta Smith. People always said she looked more like a "white girl" than the half she really was. Oh well, she thought. I can't do anything about it.
Rosetta looked around the table at her group of friends. They were all white except Andrea Scottson, who was an afican-american like heself. Usuall, she didn't care about her race at school; until the new kid showed up. At school, the majority of the kids were anglan, or mexican. Only a few african-americans were here. Anyway, there was nothing wrong with the new kid. On the contrary, he was normal. He's also one of those guys that isn't to skinny and isn't too ft. he's just right. Kind of toned too. Curly brown hair (like Josh Groban's. Sigh, swoon.), average height, brown eyes, cute funny, nice, cute...mature. That's the only thing interesting about the whole situation. He was mature; hardly any guys at her school are mature.
He was aslo really eas to talk to. Rosetta found herself opening up to a complete stranger! and she was telling him how she much hated guys. (no offense) She also opened up about her former internet boyfriend. (doen't work out and she recomends not to try it; he's also the reason she hates guys) No, he was normal enough. The problem is, she is starting to like him a lot! But that was a problem because she's balck (or half) and he's white...and she met his parents and they had stared at her like she was a bug.

                ~                                 ~                                     ~
It all started out on his fourteenth birthday on the 4st of January. His birthday was really the 1st but they had been on break so they were celebrating now. His parents (who're divorced by the way) came to the school to have luch with him. He had asked Rosetta is he could sit with her at lunch and she said yes. (both not realizing that his parents were about to arive.) So his parents walked into the school and up to him and asked looking straight at Rosetta, "Tyler, darling. Come sit with us at this table where it'll be just the three of us." His mother gestured to a table behind her that was completely empty. Tyler had looked at Rosetta and then regrettably got up. His dad picked up his lunch tray and threw it in the garbage and handed him a Sonic bag. He knew what his parents were doing; they were making him move away from Rosetta just because she's what they'd call "black trash."
His parents are extremely racist. That's why they had to leave their home in Wisconsin. They have to move to a new state evey year for this reason. His parents lose their jobs because they refuse to work with a black or a mexican or an oriental. " I guess I'll see you in class later, Rosie." he'd said, waving to her and then walking away.
"Bye." she'd replied, wondering if she had done something wrong and then turning her back on him.
                              ~                                 ~                             ~

Looking back on that day, rosetta doesn't think Tyler's parents liked her all that much because they didn't want to sit at an almost empty table. It had only been Rosetta, Ty and two of their friends. She again looked the table at her friends.
Ryan was resting his head on his arms like he did every morning. Keia was yanking and beating on him for no reason, as usual. Rosetta didn't have the energy to tell her to leave him alone so she judt shrugged. It wasn't hurting him at all. Michael (of of her many Michael friends), the one who looks like Mo from the Three Scrooges, was taking to his girlfriend Brittney and his friend Autumn. Nathaniel was chasing Trevor aroung the commons--lunchroom.
Sarah was talking to Elizabeth about a drawing of edward from " Full Metal Alchemist."   Andrea and Megan were talking to   Lauren about some odds and end thing while she put multiple packets of Sweet&Low onto her tea. Rosetta hated Sweet&Low. And come on! It wasn't even 8 o'clock yet. And then, as if on cue, the world became a little brighter and she went deaf to all that was around her as her friend Ty walked into the room. They always say time will stop as well as your heart when the love of your life walks into the room.
She's not sure if Ty is the love of her life but he's close enough. Her gaze locked on to him and him alone and his eyes met hers. He doesn't know how she feels about him; he can't. All he thins is they're friends and sh'e going to make sure it stays that way. How would a guy like him like an ugly girl like her? Honestly, she knows that she's not pretty; she doesn't need the smartest, maturest, the nicest...the hottest guy in school to tell her so.
Besides, even if he didn't think she was ugly, and would want to go out with her, there'd be one major problem. Okay, three major problems. 1. she's not allowed to date. 2. she's too self-comscious of her body and 3. his parents. But hey, a girl can dream can't she?
Yea, Ty's just right. A little muscle, a great personality, and did she mention he's a total hottie? Well, chances of him liking her back are slim to none. Even though he's the guy every girl wishes for. Thank God he's the only one like him.
"Hey Rosie." Ty said, walking up to their group's table. Ty had only ben going to Rosetta's school since like, the beginning of the semester. Now at the end of April, he was one of the gang.
"Hey Ty." she replied smiling. She loved his nickname for her. Ty reached over and pulled someone out of their spot at the table by their collar and sat down. The table had so many people on it that it's surprising no one is sitting on someone else. Though that has been known to happen. If you wanted a place to sit, you had to fught for it. He started digging through his backpack for his planner; Rosetta did the same.
Ty looked around the group and then asked," Hey! what're you guys doing this weekend?" Replies of: homework, shopping and others were mumbled. Rosetta knew these were just excuses. None of them are really going to do any of these things. No one had homework. Rosetta had already asked. They don't want to hang out with Ty because of his parents. Everyone knew what his parents are like and Rosetta knows how embarrased he is because of them.
Ty looked disappointed but didn't say anything. "I'm not doing anything." Rosetta blurted out. Ty looked up surprised; so did everyone at the table. Rosetta hardly got out to do anything. A grin broke out across ty's whole face while everyone else looked like they had just figured out that she was black.
"Really?" he could hardly keep the excitement from his voice. He didn't want to sound too eager. Behind his back, their friends were shaking their heads and hands "No." Rosetta didn't know if she was doing anything or not. Her parents know who Ty is so why wouldn't they allow her to hang out with him. That's the one rule in her family before she goes out somewhere with someone is, her parents have to meet the person and they have to know where she'll be. An adult has to come along to.
"Sure." she smiled. "I'll talk to my parents." She knew though that she'd be able to go but she worried about his parents.
"Great!" he was so happy and she didn't want to burst his bubble of bliss (try saying that 5x fast) but she needed to know.
" Ty. What about your parents?" Ty paused and thought about it for a second then his face fell. It hurt her to see it but she had no choice she needed to ask.
"Oh. i didn't think of that." he said dejectedly. His shoulders slumped forward. "I'm sorry Rosie. I never thought of my parents. I wouldn't want to make you uncomfortable."
Rosetta put a hand on his shoulder and waited for him to look at her. " Ty, it's not your fauly. And   I've dealt with your parents before. i'll be fine. I just don't want to get you in trouble with your parents because I came to your house."
Ty seemed to take in what she said and then shot up straight with a smile on his face. "I got it! I know where we can go! We can go to the movies! When ever I telll my 'rents that I'm taking a girl to the movies, they don't care. Well, my mom anyway. So...what do you think?" He looked expectantly at her, his eyes held a desperate look.
"Well, it won't be a...date, will it?" Rosetta asked nervously.
Ty thought it over then said, "Nah! Just as friends. So, what do'ya say?" he grinned a grin that took up his whole face. Rosetta thought it over. She didn't have to run into his mom, could be alonewith Ty (not including the chapperone), what did she say? Great!
"I'll think about it then talk to my parents, okay?" she giggled. He looked so funny and cute with that grin.
"Okay." he replied. They both stood up just as the bell signaling the beginning of tutorials rang.
"But don't make me wait too long okay, Rosie Posie? I have to go do my last DRA so...see you on the bus or...in class." With taht, he walked away towards the 8th grade hallway.
"See ya!" she called, heading towards the library in the 7th grade hallway. She was in eighth grade but she wanted to go to the library which was in the seventh grade side of the shool. Despite the fact that seventh and eighth graders go into the library, it's located in the seventh grade hallway. But that didn't matter at the moment. she had a date!
